Men's Club Standings

The Men's Club Shootout standings are heating up. The top 10 point winners throughout the season are invited to the Men's Club Shootout. Currently Ray Hussong and Alan Burt sit at the top of the standings with 50 and 45 points respectively. Also in the top 5 are Whitney Hawkes, Walter Polteraitis and John Pesavento. There are 10 people seperated by only 9 points vying for the final 5 spots in the tournament. With only three tournaments remaining it should be an exciting finish!

This week's tournament is a 2-Man Scramble and figures to see some low scores. The next tournament is the always popular Titliest Tournament and we finish up with the final Ryder Cup event in October.

1st Annual Rob Novak Memorial Golf Tournament

Under sunny skies Lyman Orchards Golf Club hosted the 1st Annual Rob Novak Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday June 8, 2009. The memorial tournament was the largest event Lyman has put on to date with a double shot gun golf tournament of 288 golfers followed by a dinner for 400 friends and family members of Rob’s.

The tournament not only commemorated the life of Rob Novak but also brought awareness to the importance of becoming an organ donor. Rob himself donated organs used to save the lives of two children.

A few heartfelt words were spoken at dinner by Rob’s
mother, Barbara, and wife, Sage, followed by an uplifting slide show of Rob and his friends and family. The event was a huge success raising an outstanding $25,000 for Novak’s two young daughter’s education funds.

Demo Day

The rain didn’t stop the golfers from coming out to Lyman Orchards Golf Club’s June 12th Demo Day! Bridgestone, Callaway, Nike and Cobra set up on our driving range and welcomed golfers to demo their latest products.

Bridgestone offered the ‘Bridgestone Ball Challenge’ which invited golfers to step up and take a few swings to receive info regarding club and ball speed. This information was used for a ball fitting to aid customers in finding the best ball to maximize his or her distance.

Callaway, Nike and Cobra also saw many participants as well testing out their new clubs for this summer’s golf season.

Congradulations Eric and Samantha!!

Two of Lyman Orchards Junior Members were chosen to play with a PGA Tour Player. On Tuesday evening during the week of the Traveler's Championship Eric Austin and Samantha Pavano will get to Play with the Pro's. 24 Juniors were selected from Connecticut and Western Massachusetts based on how much money they raised for the Birdies For Charity fundraiser. The group as a whole raised nearly $10,000 for the local community.

We are proud of Eric and Samantha for not only helping their community, but also for getting the opportunity of a lifetime. We wish them the best of luck and hope that they play lights out on Tuesday.

Connecticut Telso Golf League: Short Game Clinic

Yesterday, Head Professional Jason Beffert and golf staff assistant, Dan Valk, hosted a short game clinic for the Connecticut Telso Golf League. 50 league members, friends, and family attended the clinic and received tips focusing on the improvement of their short game. Both Jason and Dan presented helpful information and demonstrations to the crowd on chipping, pitching, putting, and how to approach a bunker shot. At the end of the hour long clinic, guests were welcome to use the practice facilities and receive some one-on-one attention from Jason and Dan.

The next CT Telso clinic is expected to take place in June and will focus on driving techniques.

Two Ball Best Ball

The fog didn't slow down the competition this week in the Two Ball Best Ball tournament this weekend. It was another hotly contested race as we saw a 4 way tie for 1st place with a score of 66. It was lights out for these teams even though the fog held off the sun for most of the morning. The four teams who tied were Jim Heckman and Paul Piantek, Whit Hawkes and Ray Hussong, Mark Jannacone and John Esposito, and finally Martin Smith and Geoff Deville.

The teams of John Lapan and Brian Bajek and Lary Ahearn and Gene Early both shot 67 to tie for second place. The Men's Club is off to a strong start and the competition for the top ten is getting fierce.

The next Men's Club event is a skin's game Saturday May 23. This will be the first tournament that will be on the entire Jones course.

Swing Into Spring Clinic

Today was our first "Swing Into Spring" golf clinic for women. 31 ladies attended the clinic where they enjoyed lunch, learned from Maureen Melleky, a registered Physical Therapist, and finally, dodged the rain outside getting tips on the full swing, putting, and chipping. The ladies were treated to a fascinating presentation by Maureen who is a certified Body Balance For Performance Specialist. She ran the group through a series of strength and flexibility tests showing how the body is supposed to be used in the golf swing.

The rain held off just long enough for everyone to get out to the Lyman Orchards Practice Facilities and get a few tips from our Pro's. They were treated to full swing tips from Dick Bierkan, chipping tips from Dave Christenson, and putting tips from Jason Beffert. The pro's were very impressed by the improvement throughout the day.

The next Ladies event will be at Lyman Orchards Golf Club on June 18. There will be a free clinic at 7:30 am for all ladies signed up for golf. The golf event will start at 8:30. If you would like to play but still may not feel ready to play the golf course, come to Lyman Orchards on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:30 to learn the etiquette in a non-intimidating environment.

Nassau Tournament

Today's Nassau Tournament was once again a hotly contested match. The format for the event saw winners for low front 9, low back 9, and low total in both gross and net divisions. Ron Gitlin and Pete Philipse fired 68 to tie for low total in the net division. Brian Bajek shot a 33 to take top honors for low front 9 and Dave McClellan shot a smooth 31 to win low back 9.

The gross division was hotly contested once again with John Pesavento taking top honors with a low total of 80. There was a tie for low front 9 between Ken Stella and Jack Maloney at 39, and low back 9 honors went to Masaharu Osada with a 40.

We will not have a tournament next weekend due to Mother's Day. The next event is a two player best ball on Saturday May 16.

Men's Club Results

The sun wasn't the only thing heating up on Sunday. It took another stellar performance to take top honors at this week's men's club tournament. Walt Polteraitis was a staggering 12 shots up on par at the end of the Individual vs. Par event. John Lapan and Allan Burt were 5 strokes ahead of par to tie for second place. It looks like the competition is going to be tough throughout the season for the Lyman Orchards Men's Club.

The next event will include both gross and net divisions in a Nassau event. The tournament is scheduled for Sunday May 3.

Lary Ahearn, Luigi Ferraro Winners of first Men's Club Event

Lary shot an 81 to take the gross honors while Luigi fired a sizzling 63 to take the top spot in the net division. Ken Stella and Masaharu Osada shot 84's to tie for second in the gross division. You had to bring your "A" game in the net division as Walt Polteritis and Doug McConnell both fired 64's to tie for second.
